Indoor Storage Tips

  • Number 1 tip -- label your boxes. Doing so can make organizing your unit easy, and lighten the hassle of finding specific items when you need them. Creating an inventory list to keep at home is an extra step that can be helpful when you need to locate items.
  • Proper air circulation inside your unit helps to safeguard against moisture condensation. Be sure to to leave at least 1/2 inch between your belongings and the the unit walls. 
  • When covering items use cloth; plastic sheeting limits airflow.
  • Placing an open bag of charcoal in your unit may also help to control moisture.
  • Don't stack cardboard boxes directly on the floor, stack them on pallets. Keeping boxes elevated improves air circulation and helps protect against moisture.
  • Disassemble large items like bed frames. Doing so maximizes space and allows you to fit more items into your unit.
  • Place frequently used items near the door.
  • Leave a walkway from the front to the back of your unit to allow for greater accessibility. 
  • Thoroughly clean and dry appliances to prevent corrosion. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors ajar to prevent mold and odors. 
  • Store mattresses and box springs on long edges for firmer support. Be sure to elevate them from the floor and cover them for added protection against moisture.
  • Pack books and documents flat to protect their spines.
  • To protect clothing and textiles, store them in wardrobe cartons. Adding mothballs and/or cedar chips helps protect against moths.
  • Unprinted paper should be used for packing -- this will prevent ink smudges on your belongings.
  • To protect bikes and other metal items, wipe all metal surfaces with a rag moistened with a few drops of oil.

  • Thoroughly clean the vehicle's interior.

  • Change and fill all engine fluids.
  • Add stabilizer to the fluid to prevent fuel breakdown.

  • Plug tailpipe with steel wool to prevent rodents from using the exhaust system as a winter home.
